When I was a tiny child my
father got a VW bug. I remember being fascinated by the enameled
emblem on the hood, which was just about at my eye level. I have
always made things; when I was fourteen I began to make jewelry.
Like many other Northwest jewelry
artists, my work tells a story, balancing between the personal
and the archetypal. My intent is to evoke something larger than
the few square inches of color and metal I play with. I see the
influence of Byzantine enamels, Celtic and Scandinavian medieval
jewelry, and the worlds of myth and legend in my work. When I
look at a piece of jewelry from a thousand years ago, I delight
to see the choices someone made and the marks of their tools;
glass on metal can last for centuries. I am intrigued by the
tension between the ephemeral life I have and the durable beauty
I create.
